Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport is the largest airport in Italy. The airport is named after Leonardo da Vinci, who first designed a flying machine with wings and a proto helicopter. In 2011, the airport serviced 37.7 million passengers. The airport is Europe’s sixth busiest airport and the 25th in the world. The airport is located just 18.9 nautical miles west southwest of Rome’s historic city centre. Italy’s flag carrier, Alitalia, utilizes the airport as a hub.
