What to do in Vietnam

Vietnam is a long and thin-shaped country in Southeast Asia, where the land looks like an ascending dragon. It is home to some of Asia’s most stunning natural landscapes, heritage sites, and tastiest cuisine. That’s why many travellers include Vietnam in their travel bucket list. And you should too!

Visit Ho Chi Minh City and see the Saigon Opera House and Notre Dame. Don’t forget to explore the waters of Mekong Delta and to shop at the lively floating markets. Another top destination is Hanoi for the museums, temples, and parks. Check out the National Museum of Vietnamese History, take plenty of photos at the Temple of Literature and Ngoc Son Temple, and stroll through the relaxing park of Hoan Kiem Lake.

Other cities you shouldn’t miss are Da Nang for the food tours, Phan Thiet for Mui Ne beach, and the charming well-preserved Old Town in Hoi An, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Vietnam is also famous for Ha Long Bay where you can tour around the island aboard a classic junkboat.

Phong Nha-Ke Bang national park is one of the most beautiful places to visit, where you can explore the magical Phong Na cave. The trails of gorgeous Sapa are also popular for trekkers. And Cuc Phuong National Park in Hanoi is where you’ll see some Vietnam’s best natural scenery which is home to some of the rarest wildlife in Asia.

With heaps of fresh veggies and seafood all over the country, Vietnam has a lot of tasty treats to offer you. Find the best noodle dishes like mi quang in Da Nang and cau lau in Hoi An. They’re the classic street food choice in Vietnam. Check out what else you should spend your Vietnamese Dong on with the ultimate list of Vietnamese food.

When to visit Vietnam

Shoulder season is from December to March where you’ll enjoy cheaper rates compared to high season (July-August) and still experience pleasant weather. Autumn (Sept–Dec) and spring (March-April) are the most favourable seasons if you plan to visit the whole of Vietnam.

Vietnamese is the official language and English is not commonly spoken, so you should bring a good phrasebook and language app on your trip.

To visit Vietnam, Australians need a valid visa, a visa exemption document, or a written approval letter for a visa on arrival. For more info about your travel documents, check out Smartraveller
