What to do in Kathmandu
Kathmandu is the capital and biggest city of Nepal. It is a tourist getaway that’s full of history, culture, beautiful sights, and fascinating people. Plus the city is an affordable destination, which means you’ll get your money’s worth for an incredible trip.
Kathmandu is known for its temples and museums. Start with the divine and go on a temple run. The must-see Swayambhunath Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There’s also Bijeshwori Temple and Budda Neelkantha Temple, among many others.
From the divine to the diverse, Kathmandu’s museums won’t disappoint you too. Check out the city’s Narayanhiti Palace Museum, National Museum, Taragaon Museum, and Tribhuvan Museum.
Trekking is also popular in the city, so make your way to the popular Everest Region and Annapurna Region. You can also trek or go hike the Kathmandu Valley. And if you’re an adrenaline junkie, there’s also bungy jumping at The Last Resort east of Kathmandu.
Is shopping your favourite sport? You’ll find the city’s local products, including arts and crafts at Thamel and Kopundol. And for luxury items, walk along Khicha Pokhari and the New Road areas.
Schedule your trip during the city’s best events and festivals for a unique experience in Kathmandu. There’s the Indra Jatra harvest festival in September, the Mani Rimdu, Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival, and Teej.

When to visit Kathmandu
Kathmandu is lovely year-round, so there’s no particular best time for you to visit. Spring (March-May) is when the city is filled with colours and is mildly warm. Summer (June-August) is when you can see lush flora because it’s the monsoon season, but unlike other Asian countries the rain in Kathmandu occurs mostly at night.
The best tourist season is autumn (September-November) during high season, and you can enjoy cooler temperatures in winter (December-February). But if you want fewer crowds, just schedule your trip away from high season.
Secure your travel visa first before flying to Nepal and visiting Kathmandu. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months too. Just visit Smartraveller for more travel info.
