Being one of the earliest cities, it is famous for historical showcases catering to those looking for a taste of Southeast Asian history, or to discover how the first Filipinos lived. The city also has the Philippines’ second largest river, the Agusan River. Butuan has been a flourishing city with sophisticated naval technology and metallurgy since the 10th century.

Relive history

Eleven nearly 1,700-year-old Balangay (balangay being the oldest watercraft used in the Philippines) have been discovered in Butuan, with some already in the Balangay Shrine Museum where other artifacts are on display. Travelers can also cruise along the Agusan River, which is not only the second largest river in the Philippines, but also an important trade route and water source during the country's early days.

Other historical stops include the ruins of Banza Church, where early Filipinos first converted to Christianity, and the Magellan landing site where Ferdinand Magellan first arrived before proceeding to shape the Philippines' history. For the adventurous, Mount Mayapay is a 675m-hiking challenge to the tabletop summit.

Since domestic airlines no longer serve snacks and drinks on board, it is best that you have a meal or snack before your flight to avoid feeling queasy while airborne. Otherwise, there are snack items and drinks available at the on board snack bar of both airlines where you can purchase food items and pay in pesos or US dollars.

Cebu Pacific still provides free baggage allowance of 20kg per passenger, plus one hand-carried baggage of up to 7kg, which must be small enough to fit in the overhead bin.
